So like I was running tonight, and somewhere around 2.5 miles I started thinking about making this post. I planned on using the cliched “lol no one noticed that I didn’t post last week,” but lo and behold, there is actually a comment asking where the update is.
I didn’t post last week for some reason or another; I was probably busy or tired or I forgot. Wednesday the 7th was a five-mile tempo run, and that went just fine. The big deal was Sunday, when I ran ten miles. I was supposed to do it Saturday, but again, busy. It was slow and tiring, but I really felt accomplished at the end. I hadn’t run a double-digit distance since September.
Total miles March 5-11: 19
Last week was a recovery week. The mileage goes down a bit to allow all the muscles and other bits repair themselves without losing fitness. My Monday run was bumped to Tuesday: a nice, easy six miles. I ran another five on Wednesday. The stupid weather’s really been fluctuating - Tuesday was around 70 and Wednesday was around 35.
I spent all weekend working in the basement, and by the time I finished each night, I was too tired to finish off the week. What was meant to be Saturday’s run ended up happening tonight (five miles).
Total miles March 12-18: 11
To try and catch up, I have to run three miles tomorrow night, then try to fit in a six-mile temo run in the middle of the week. Wednesday’s shot, because coworkers from the London and Glasgow offices are going to be in town and we’re going out to dinner (and drinking, oh god the drinking). Saturday is twelve miles!
In other, more serious news, I’m going to a funeral tomorrow morning for a guy from work who died of cancer last week. We started as interns together in 1999. He was a year older than me.

Okay so I still hate speed workouts, but last week’s at least made me think fondly on the hot, dry, summer night workouts of last year. It really sucks running through icy water and mud, uphill, then into 30mph winds going down the other side. It’s already below frfeezing, how much more nasty can this get?
But I did it all the same. I don’t know what my times were because my watch battery died. In December.
On Saturday I ran a fairly pleasant, though thouroughly exhausting nine-miler. My times were somewhere in the nine-minute per mile range, which really isn’t that great. I’d like to be down in the eight- to eight-and-a-half-minute range. My left knee was really sore on Sunday. It’s feeling better now.
Last night (Monday) was a little four mile easy run. I decided against just shuffling along and instead pushed myself to run a strong, yet still comfortable pace. At about 3.5 miles, I got into that running zone, where everything feels like it’s working at maximum efficiency and perfect. Breathing, arms, legs, everything is just fluid and you feel like you could go forever.
Then I turned to come down my street, and that simple act of slowing and changing direction threw everything off. Bah. Oh well, it all felt pretty good in the end.
Total miles last week: 18
